My team is still in 2nd, and Otto is pulling away. But, this week, "real baseball" has put my dorky fantasy baseball to the back burner...

Now, on to real baseball. It was some week for the ole' Baltimore Orioles. My beloved hometown stickball team took 2 of 3 from the Bloody Sox, and then they took 2 of 3 from the Skanks...err, Yanks. On behalf of the entire Orioles fan base, I would like to thank Kason Gabbard, David Murphy, and Engel Beltre for being nice enough to change cities with Eric "Hideous Beard" Gagne. In doing so, it looks like they gave the Orioles more opportunities to light him up each season. In 2 appearances against the Os, he pitched 1 inning allowing 5 ER. I mean, that's only a 45.00 ERA. Not too shabby! And, oh yeah, we won one of the games on a moonshot HR by Millar. How sweet is that one? (More impotantly, MASN gave us our first glimpse of Millar's wife! Wow!) AOn top of that, Millar got an ice bath after the game...that also turned into a wet shirt moment for the lovely Amber Theoharris! (If you watch this video, notice the excessive ass-smaking by Paul Bako. Creepy, isn't it?)

Then, the Birds went to NY to face the overpaid Yanks. They didn't have to face Clemens because he was nice enough to get himself suspended to prove he's a jackass, I mean tough guy. Instead, we faced his sorry replacement Karstens and destroyed him. Then, the Yanks got mad. So, "Classy" Joe Torre pulled all of his starters and started plunking out hitters. Instead of retaliating, the Os just decided to win 12-0 and then 6-3 the next day. In taking 2 of 3, we touched up the untouchable Mariano Rivera for 4 runs in 2 innings of work. Maybe the sandman is finally getting old?

And, to top off the perfect week as an Oriole fan, we signed our top 2 draft picks (both of whom are represented by Boras). The most exciting of the 2 is Matt Wieters, the switch-hitting stud catcher from Ga Tech. He could reach the majors as soon as late 2008, but more realistically by 2009. He'll start this season with some ABs for the Ironbirds. And, I'm not drooling over a 2009 lineup that could include Markakis, Wieters, Nolan Reimold, and Brandon Snyder. Finally, there may be some offense headnig to Charm City!

Week 15-16

POW(s): Albert Pujols
Week 15: 9/21, 3 2Bs, 2 HRs, 3 RBIs, 9 BB, 50 Points.
Week 16: 8/28, 3 2Bs, HR, 11 RBIs, SB, 51.5 Points

Albert now has 3 consecutive POW awards. Out of 6 hits, 5 went for extra bases, and 4 went over the fence. He's off to a monster start to his second half. Maybe LaRussa's decision not to play him in the All Star Game ticked him off enough to get him on figure. If so...thanks Tony.

I had a big weekend to start the second half, with a sweep of Flash. Currently, I'm sitting at 3 games behind Otto. I have some guys coming off the DL (like Speier) and some young guys who might deserve a callup (like Garrett Olson), so I will be looking to make some moves soon.

At the All-Star Break...

First, time for the Week 14 POW: Nick Markakis (7/26, 3 2Bs, 7 RBIs, 2 SB, 5 BB, 45 points).

I had a terrible week and limped into the All Star break. After closing to within 1 game of Otto, I was swept by Mizzou over the weekend. The bright spot was the emergence of 2 new SPs. Matt Garza finally got called up, and he threw 6 shutout innings for a win. Also, Garret Olson was called up by the Orioles. His first start was rather lackluster, but he only gave up 2 runs in 4.1 innings. The Os have said he will remain in their rotation for the second half. For now, he'll remain in my minors, but a few good starts would earn him a 2nd half callup.

Now, time for some first half awards.

TOP OFFENSIVE PLAYER: Miguel Cabrera.

M-Cab edges out Pujols for this award. He batted .324 and had a 969 OPS in the first half. He also added 18 HR and 61 RBI to come into the break with 492.5 Points.

TOP STATING PITCHER: Johan Santana.

No surprise here. Johan edeges Lackey with his dominant first half. His record stands at a good - but not spectacular - 10 and 6. But, all of his other stats are just nasty. He has a 2.75 ERA, a 1.03 WHIP, and a 125/30 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He goes into the break with 436.75 Points.

TOP RELIEF PITCHER: Jose Valverde

Here is the first surprise. Valverde edges out Hoffman and Papelbon for this award. He had 26 Saves in the first half to go along with a 2.83 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and a 38/14 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT: Gerald Laird

Laird had am 805 OPS last season, so I decided to go with him as my starter. But, he has been so bad that I sent him to the minors and eventually released him. He started to heat up slightly, so I dealt Pudge and went with him again. But, he has been pretty bad, so I'm looking for replacements anywhere I can find them. Thanks Gerald...for nothing.

BIGGEST SURPRISE: Tom Gorzelanny

I expected him to be OK this year. I got nervous during his weak spring. And, he has been nothing but great this year. He enters the break with a 9-4 record, 3.10 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, and a 75/35 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Keep it up Tom...

Week 13:

POW: Trevor Hoffman (0-0, 4 IP, 4 Saves, 1 ER, 52.5) Trevor takes home his second POW award after a week with 4 saves. My team had a pretty big weekend, including a spectacular day from my bullpen on Saturday (3-0, 3 Saves all from RPs). Calling up Scott Baker looks like it was a good move. He was terrific last night. Baker threw a CG with 1 ER, 3K, 1BB. But, he was tagged with a loss after being outduled by Bonderman. Matt Garza has been called up to the Twins, and he'll start in the bullpen. I'm hoping he does well and joins the Twins' rotation shortly.

My offense did absolutely nothing this week. I had 1 HR all week, and it was by Chris Duncan. My recent FA pickup of Nate Schierholtz is no longer working, as he doesn't do much of anything. I've thought about calling up Carlos Quentin, but he is struggling as well. Today, I'll begin looking for a new FA to play at UTIL. It sounds like Tejada is out for a while, so I'll be stuck with Uribe at SS. And, Laird was hitting better until I called him up, and he's now doing nothing again. Hopefully Week 13 was just an unlucky one for my offense...I sure am glad it's over.

Bye Bye Pudge...

I made a trade late last night to bolster my minor leagues and build for the future. I sent Pudge packing to the Tri-State Titans - along with RP Todd Coffey - for Neil Walker, Ryan Sweeney, and a 3rd round pick.

Neil Walker is a 21-year-old slugging prospect for the Pirates. He was a 1st round pick in 2004 as a Catcher, but was moved to 3B full-time this season. He is currently flourishing for the AA Altoona Curves to the tune of a 925 OPS (313/379/546, 11 HR, 37 RBIs). And, the win in the final game moved me into a First Place tie with Otto.

We voted on a rule change regarding overrides. We don't usually changes rules in mid-season. Congratulations Albert! Pujols didn't have a great week at the plate (only 5 hits), but he made his 5 hits count as 4 went for extra bases. His 2HR game on Sunday propelled him to the prestigious POW. He picked a nice week to step up, as none of my pitchers had particularly good weeks. Apologies to Brad Lidge...but I just HAD to use this picture.

Pudge was a close second with 45.75 points. He went 11/25 for a 400 average. He also added 5 XBH, but only 1 was a HR. Regardless, this is the best week I have had from a Catcher all season long.

And, Clemens has a "fatigued groin"? On the week, Tejada went 9 for 22 with 3HR, 8RBI, and 55.75 Points. One more hit, and Tejada likely would have won the award.

I just can't seem to get any closer to Otto in the standings, as I remain 2 games behind him. I closed out the weekend taking 2 of 3 from Sourman over the weekend. My offense had a pretty nice week all together. Miggy had a great week. Carl Crawford and Markakis chipped in with 40+ point weeks, and Miguel Cabrera, Pujols, and Josh Barfield all added more than 34 points. Chris Duncan and Mike Sweeney addded 2 HRs apiece. Despite having only 1 XBH, Pudge did go 9 for 21.

My pitching was very solid this week. With only 1 start, Johan compiled 45 points! Recently acquired Vicente Padilla went 1-1 on the week. Trevor Hoffman continues to dominate, as he picked up 4 more saves this week. Valverde added 2 saves, and Papelbon added one more as my strong unit of closers is only one off the league lead currently held by Galaxy.

Week 7:

Player of the Week: Jose Valverde (4IP, 0-0, 4 Saves, 4K, 0BB, 0ER, 59.5 Points).

I had a pretty good week, and it ended with a 4-0 record over the weekend. Here's a breakdown of some of the standouts.

Top 5 Starting Pitchers:
1) Eric Hurley: 5-0, 1.84 ERA, 36/12 K/BB
2) Clay Bucholz: 1-1, 1.85 ERA, 46/4 K/BB
3) Scott Baker: 3-2, 3.16 ERA, 41/4 K/BB
4) Matt Garza: 2-2, 3.75 ERA, 41/15 K/BB
5) Garret Olson: 1-4, 4.21 ERA, 41/10 K/BB (4 Quality Starts in a row)

Top Relief Pitchers:
1) Jim Hoey: 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 18/3 K/BB
2) Andrew Brown: 1-2, 1.74 ERA, 27/9 K/BB

Top Offensive Players:
1) Brandon Moss: 275/387/511, 7 HR, 25 RBI
2) Chris Nelson: 259/323/420, 4 HR, 21 RBI

Some of my minor leaguers are already in the majors. Tom Mastny and Eric O'Flaherty are already in ML bullpens, and both are pitching very well. Gerald Laird is the starting C for the Rangers, but he is struggling mightily. Carlos Quentin is having trouble adjusting to ML pitching so far this season, and he may find himself back in AAA shortly. Pedro Martinez is rehabbing from injury, and he should be back in late July or early August.

Week 6

Player of the Week: Ian Snell (1-0, 14IP, 12 K, 2 BB, 4 ER, 48.25 pts.)

Cliff Lee had 50 pts, but I acquired him in mid-week, so he doesn't qualify since most of his points were earned with a CG victory as a member of PIB.

Trade 1: Jermaine Dye, John Buck, Wes Littleton, Chris Narveson to PIB for Cliff Lee, Ivan Rodriguez.
I get a very solid starter in Cliff Lee. I like the fact that he pitches for a team with an outstanding offense. Pudge is definitely getting older, but he should still provide solid production for a catcher (which is something I have been missing because Laird was such a disappointment).

Trade 2: BLOCKBUSTER: I traded Manny Ramirez, Aaron Harang, and Edwin Encarnacion to Hounds for Miguel Cabrera, Mike Sweeney, Todd Coffey, and Tom Mastny. I get one of the best young players in all of baseball in M-Cab (who is only 24). I'm not a fan of Sweeney, and he'll just hold down the fort at my Util spot until I can upgrade. Coffey and Mastny are solid RPs who will help solidify my bullpen. I give up Manny, who I cannot stand. He's a great talent, but I'd rather trade him too early in his career than too late. If I had waited too much longer, he wouldn't have much value left. Harang is the only piece I'm sad to part with. Even though his 5-1 start is deceivingly good (terrible ERA, great run support), he is a strikeout machine. But, the presence of Miguel Cabrera eases that pain.

I now have an excellent young nucleus to my offense: Pujols, M-Cab, Carl Crawford, Markakis, Barfield, Duncan...with Carlos Quentin on the way.

Pess Weighs in on the Rocket

So, what would happen if Barry Bonds signed a contract saying he could leave the team whenever he wasn't playing? What if he decided to rent himself out to a team who appaeared to be a playoff contender in June each season? He would be crucified by the media. But, here comes the Rocket Man, riding in on his white horse to collect his 4.5 million buckaroos a month to resurrect the worst pitching staff money can buy (Honestly, how do you spend a Michael Bay movie's worth of cash and have a weak pitching staff?).

I guess it's time for the game's ultimate Ring Chaser to continue the self-indulgent end to his spectacular career. He is absolutely one of the best pitchers the game has ever seen...no doubt about it. Is he still very good? Absolutely. But, his new found "let me choose a team with a good chance to win and come back in June" shtick is getting tiresome. He's like a junkie searching for his next "fix." And, his new scheme to collect another ring could lead to a disgusting trend in Major League contracts. Why won't everyone at the end of their career do this? Why don't other veterans sit around until May to sign "3-month leases" with the Yanks/Sox/Mets/Cubs?

I'm just not sure there has been an athlete in the last 20 years who I have despised so much (and believe me...I despise lots of things). All I can hope for is a failed season, a wasted $28 million, and hopefully an end to his career. No more Roger. Please...I can't take anymore.

Week 5

Player of the Week: Trevor Hoffman (0-0, 3 Saves, 3 IP, 4K, 0 BB, 46.25 Pts.)

The ageless closer earned this week's top honor. It was the lowest point total for a P.O.t.W., but Hoffman still had a nice week. He was successful in 3 save opps, and he yielded no runs. He helped my team move to within 4 games of Otto (thanks to some help from Bklyn Royal Giants over the weekend). My offense has yet to get it going this season. Veterans like Manny Ramirez and Jermaine Dye are off to slow starts, with Manny finally starting to heat up. Youngsters like Josh Barfield and Edwin Encarnacion have been huge disappointments (Barfield did have a very nice 12 point day today). Chris Duncan has been called up to help, and he's relegated Markakis to the bench for now. The pitching has carried my team so far, with all 5 P.O.t.W. winners earning their keep from the bump. However, the rotation got some bad news this week, as Carp will be out for at least 3 months - and maybe the rest of the season. With that in mind, the hitters will need to pick it up to keep pace with Otto.

Player of the Week for Week 4

Aaron Harang: 2-0, 15.2IP, 14/2 K/BB, 7ER, 67.25 Pts.

Harang ended a great week with an 8IP victory on Sunday. Both were instrumental in a big upset victory over Otto yesterday. Otto had 4 SP going, and I only had one (Gorz). But, those 2 really came through. Heading into the Sunday night game, I was losing and needed a big night. Manny had a good game, and Paps put me over the top with his save. My hitters also had a great game; Markakis, Miggy, and Pujols all were beasts.

I had a pretty solid week as I try to climb back towards the top of the week. I took 2 of 3 from Otto over the weekend. I would have taken all 3, but Solomon Torres blew a win for Snell. And, that game ended with a Russ Martin Grand Slam in extra innings. Otto has Martin, and he won by 0.25 pts.

My 2 Buccos....

I must admit, I started the season a little nervous abotu having 2 Pirate SPs. And, after the horrible spring by Tom Gorzelanny, I was even more nervous. I wanted to deal 1 of them, but no one made me any legit offers. Reluctantly, I kept them both.

And now, I look forward to every start. Here are there numbers to start the season.

Ian Snell: 1-1, 1.80 ERA, 20 IP, 20/6 K/BB, 0.95 WHIP
Tom Gorzelanny: 2-0, 1.33 ERA, 20.1 IP, 11/4 K/BB, 0.93 WHIP

Gorz went 8.1 IP yesterday before tiring in the 9th to beat the Cards. Snell is near the NL lead in strikeouts. These guys have been awesome so far. And, I know it's early, but I'm liking what I see. Snell is 25, Gorz is 24, and they are both coming into their own. I'm excited to see what these guys can do in a full season.

Minor League Report

It's early in the minor league season, but here is a look at how my minor leaguers have started.

Starting Pitching
Phillip Humber (2-1, 3.86, 14/6 K/BB), Eric Hurley (1-0, 0.82, 10/2 K/BB), Clint Everts (1-1, 1.74), and Jimmy Barthmaier (1-0, 2.45) lead the way. Some other starters are off to solid starts as well.

Scott Baker: 0-0, 3.38
Pedro Beato: 0-0, 3.60
Jaime Garcia: 1-1, 3.60
Franklin Morales: 0-2, 3.18, 9/1 K/BB
Garrett Olson: 0-0, 3.27

Donald Veal, Matt Albers, Clay Bucholz, and Ubaldo Jimenez are slow coming out of the gate. But, all are expected to turn it around and have solid seasons.

Relief Pitching
I have quite a few RPs off to nice starts. Andrew Brown, James Hoey, and Wes Littleton have yet to be scored on. Eric O'Flahetry is sporting a 1.50 ERA.

Offense
No one on the guys in the minors have gotten off to great starts. Chris Duncan is mashing at the major league level. He's hitting LHP so well that he's getting more ABs against them than he did last year. Carlos Quentin just came off the DL and had 2 2Bs last night. I'll be trying to find room for both of them in my lineup by the end of the year.

Week 2 Completed

Player of the Week for Week 2: Daniel Cabrera (47 pts, 12.2IP, 1-0, 10K, 1BB, 5ER)

After completing a weekend sweep of J24ktARM, my team pulled their record over .500 to 8-7. Apparently he has "mild arthritis and a mild impingement" in his pitching elbow. It doesn't sound too clear how long he'll be out, but it could be a couple of weeks. I should be OK with the rest of my rotation, but I'd obviously rather him not be hurt. For now, I've picked up Randy Keisler who will be placed in the rotation while Carp is hurt. I didn't pick him up in time to get him active for his start today because I had to wait for Carp to be eligible for the DL. So, I'll see how he does before deciding to keep him or not.

First Week Completed (3-4)

Player of the Week - Johan Santana: 2-0, 13IP, 15K, 5BB, 4ER, 67.5 Points

After extending a losing streak to 4 with an opening game loss to Brooklyn (47.75 - 57.5), my team caught fire winning the second 2 games by a combined score of 296.5 to 118.55. The resurgence was led by a pitching staff that went 5-0 with 3 saves in the 3-game series. The wins came from D-Train, Harang, Lackey, Johan, and Hoffman. The saves were contributed by Papelbon, Valverde, and Shields. Pujols finally got his bat going with a big day on Sunday, and Markakis and Edwin Encarnacion had solid weekends offensively. I'm currently the leader in overall points (723 points through 7 games...over 103 points per game) and have a sub-500 record. That comes from losing some close ones and winning some blowouts. Hopefully the points keep coming like this, and the record will sort itself out.

In the real baseball world, my beloved Orioles took 2 out of 3 from the Yankees. And, if it were not for a disgusting Saturday Night collapse, the Os would (and should) have a sweep under their belts. For all the cash they spend, the Yanks appear to have zero viable starting pitchers. They have taxed their bullpen so much (no starters this season making it into the 6th inning), that they were forced to have Andy Pettitte come out of the bullpen to collect some work since it was his day to throw anyway.

The Orioles got great starting pitching from Bedard on Sunday and Trachsel on Saturday, while Loewen looked pretty good on Friday. The bullpen looked shaky at best, especially during their monumental collapse on Saturday. Kevin Millar's bat came alive, Markakis was very solid, and even Paul Bako showed some pop against the weak Yankee pitching. The Home Opener is today, and unfortunately I'm stuck at work and cannot attend. What a bummer...

Opening Series (1-3)

Well, here comes the good, the bad, and the ugly after the opening series.

The GOOD: Opening Day. Carpenter got lit up, but my other 4 OD starters went 4-0. Lackey, Dontrelle, Harang, and Johan all got wins to start the season with a bang. My bullpen has also been solid. Shields and Speier have gotten holds for me like expected. Valverde looked dominant twice and horrible once. Paps got his first save of the season. And, my 2 Pirate starters both looked good. Snell got 11 Ks in a ND, and Gorzelanny picked up a nice win.

The BAD: A 1-3 record in my first series against division rival Otto. After racking up over 180 points in the first game, I lost the next 3 (2 of 3 were extremely close...1 game decided by 1 point). But, my team is still getting points like I thought it would, so I'm not terrible concerned.

The UGLY: Carpeneter's elbow is bothering him after 1 start. He will miss his next start (and hopefully no more). It's still early, but I don't like when my aces have trouble early. If he goes down, my deal to get him will really hurt (losing B-rob and Connor Jackson).

My offense is off to a decent start despite having only 1 HR (Miggy). No one is kncking the cover off the ball yet, but it's been a solid performance. My next series is against Brooklyn. He has 3 starters in game 1, and I have none. So, my offense and bullpen will need a big day to keep me in this one and avoid a 4 game losing streak. The swelling is gone in his elbow, and his start has only been moved back from Friday to Tuesday. Hopefully, this will be the end of it...but, it has me a touch nervous.

Papelbon moved back to closer...Bullpen Preview

Well, one my my starters has become my best closer again. The Red Sox made the right move and sent him to anchor the bullpen. I'd rather have a bad 5th starter a great closer than a good 5th starter and a trio of bum closers (Timlin, Donnelly, Tavarez). Timlin is 41 and rapidly declining, and he will start the season on the DL. Tavarez can't even handle middle relief. Donnelly has been a decent RP, but he's never closed.

I think this really helps my team. Papelbon was a monster for my team last season out of the bullpen, and I expect the same this year. The team said they won't pitch him 3 days in a row to avoid shoulder problems, which sounds good to me. The last thing I need is for him to hurt that arm.

CLOSERS: I now have 2 or 3 this year. Papelbon (see above) and Trevor Hoffman. Hoffman is getting up there in age, but he hasn't shown signs of slowing down. I picked up Jose Valverde in the draft, and he has a good shot to close in Arizona.

SETUP: I have some really tough setup men in my bullpen. I have the Angels setup crew in Justin Speier (31 holds) and Scott Shields (25 holds). Speier got a lot of money to help close down the 7-8 innings. I also have Bobby Howry who had 21 holds last season for the Cubs. With the improvements that the Cubs made this off-season, Howry should have more hold opportunities. Luis Ayala is back from injury this year, and he will be in the back of the Nats bullpen. I also have Andrew Brown who was sent to Cleveland in exchange for Kouzmanoff. He has potential, but it's time for him to live up to it.

All in all, I'm very confident in this bullpen. It should bring in plenty of saves and holds. Also, there are some nice strikeout arms in there (Howry, Shields, Speier, Papelbon, Valverde all averaged near or above 1K/IP).

NIT Elite 8

Why am I updating the NIT and not the NCAA pool? I was devastated! But, not as devastated as when they became the Hofstra Pride. What a travesty!

I have 6 of my Elite Eight correct, and my competition only has 3. I did lose Kansas St, and I had them in the championship game. But, even still, I feel mt lead is unsurmountable. I am up 46-30 after 2 rounds. Unfortunately, we never decided on the wager, so it looks like nothing more than NIT bragging rights for me. A moral victory nonetheless....

2 more weeks...

While watching March Madness for 96 straight hours, I noticed that Opening Day is only 2 weeks away. That means, real baseball stories will begin. There will now be stories about actual games. Sure, Pedro Gomez will still be following Barry Bonds around discussing how he doubled in size over the last decade. And, we will still be given up to the second updates about when Roger "Captain Drama" Clemens will bless us with his return to a front running team in time to try for another ring.

But, in Baltimore, there will be some hope as the season begins. A young rotation anchored by Eric Bedard, Adam Loewen, and Daniel Cabrera has incredible potential. In 2 weeks, I will get to begin seeing if they can reach it. The O's offense still has some holes, but the front office improved in LF/1B with guys like Aubrey Huff and Jay Payton. Sam Perlozzo is getting shredded by O's fans for his inability to manage a roster and a game, and in 2 weeks he'll get his chance to prove us all wrong.

2 weeks from today will be the NCAA championship game, but it will also be MLB opening day. Since the Orioles open on the road and in a dome this year, it's unlikely that they have to play in snowfall like they did on Opening Day 2003. Nonetheless, seeing Bedard take the mound for the first time will signify a welcomed start to spring.

NIT Round 1

I think I may have already won this thing after just round. It's just us 2 because, frankly, no one else knows the NIT is going on. For those of you who don't know, the NIT is a tournament for teams that weren't good enough to make the "real" tournament or got hosed out of participating in it (sorry Syracuse). Picking this tournament is a crap-shoot since most of the teams don't care, and some of those have no interest in being there. So, you have to guess who will put forth absolutely no effort.

After the opening night of this tournament, I am off to a 5 games to 4 lead, with my friend losing a Final Four Team (Drexel) on night 1. I'll keep the thrilling updates going, as well as thrilling up dates on my NCAA brackets, which are destined to blow up after Round 2 like they always do.

I will post my completed NIT bracket for all of the interested fans as soon as this wonderful blogging site fixes its problem with uploading images.

Pessimistic Players: SP Preview

Just like with the offense, I tried to add some "new blood" to the rotation. The starting pitching can be broken down into a few distinct tiers.

Tier 1(Cy Young Tier): Chris Carpenter and Johan Santana are perennial Cy Young candidates. Johan is the best starter in baseball, and Chris Carpenter is one of the best SPs in the NL. I gave up a few good players to get Carpenter, but I was more than willing to do so in order to have him start every 5th day.

Tier 2 (All-Star Starters): The next tier of starters consists of established starters who could all have outstanding seasons. Dontrelle Willis, Aaron Harang, and John Lackey are the primary arms in this tier. Harang is probably the least well known guy out of this group, but he really came on strong last season (16-11, 3.76ERA, 216K, 1.27WHIP). All of these guys are capable of winning 18-20 games, posting low ERAs, and piling up strikeouts. While they aren't in the same category as Johan and Carpenter, they are definitely capable of putting together a Cy Young season and jumping into that tier.

Tier 3 (The "Up-and-Comers"): Jonathan Papelbon established himself as one of - if not the - best closer in baseball last season. But, to lessen the stress on his arm, he has been moved into the rotation. There is no reason to believe he won't succeed in this role. I acquired Daniel Cabrera for Brad Penny this offseason because of his phenomenal potential. He is dominant when he's "on", but he needs to be "on" more consistently. Leo Mazzone says D-Cab has a changeup now. If he cuts down his walks, he could jump up to Tier 2 this season.

Tier 4 (The Youngsters): Matt Garza, Ian Snell, and Tom Gorzelanny make up this tier. All 3 of these guys have massive potential, with Garza leading the way in that category. The 2 Pirates starters - Snell and Gorzelanny - showed last season that they belong in the big leagues. If these guys live up to their potential, Tier 2 & 3 will get a lot more crowded this season.

Pessimistic Players: Offensive Preview

C: Gerald Laird - This is probably the weakest spot in my lineup. Laird hadn't proven he can handle a full season at catcher, but he did show some reason for optimism last year. He posted a solid 805 OPS last year in part time duty, and he has earned the starting nod this year. Since he plays in a great hitters park, I hope he can maintain - or improve on - his 805 OPS from last season. At 27 years old, Laird could be positioned for a breakout season.

1B: Albert Pujols - What do I need to say about him? Pujols is an absolute monster who will be a fixture in my lineup until he retires.

2B: Josh Barfield - One of my personal favorite players (Brian Roberts) was traded this off-season in deal that brought Chris Carpenter to town. I was willing to deal B-Rob since Barfield was waiting in my minors. He showed decent power and speed last season in SD. Since he's been traded to Cleveland, I hope he can continue to improve on his production in a new league.

3B: Edwin Encarnacion - Troy Glaus was traded in the off-season and Edwin was brought in. I wanted to move towards a younger team, and starting Edwin was a move in that direction. He had an excellent rookie season, finishing with an OPS > 830. And, at age 24, there should be nowhere to go but up.

SS: Miguel Tejada - As an Orioles fan, I am really excited to have Tejada at SS. The Orioles have improved their lineup, and that should help Tejada improve his already excellent production. He had a slightly disappointing season by his standards, and he seemed disinterested at times. But, a young and improving lineup should help him bring back his passion for the game, and I expect an outstanding season from him.

OF: My "youth movement" has led to a young and extremely talented OF. My personal favorite player is Nick Markakis, who is one of my starting OFers. He had a great rookie season, and he will bat 2nd or 3rd in the Baltimore lineup this season. He has a great all around game, and his offense should boast a high average and nice power. I also added Carl Crawford this season. He is one of the best fantasy OFers around. He hits for great average, has tremendous base stealing potential, and his power improves every season. I also have 2 monster veteran bats in Jermaine Dye and Manny Ramirez. One of these guys will start in the OF, and the other will be used at my UTIL spot. In my personal (biased) opinion, you will be hard pressed to find a better group of OFers than the 4 I have. As long as the stay healthy, I should get outstanding production from these guys, and there is an excellent mix of young guys and veterans.

All in all, I expect monster performance from my offense. Laird is obviously the weak link, but there really aren't many catchers who aren't considered weak offensively. Last year I had Josh Willingham at C, but I traded him because he won't be used much as a catcher anymore. I am relying on some 2nd year guys like Encarnacion, Barfield, and Markakis to have big years. And, I think they all will. Even with a few gambles, there are more than enough "can't miss players" like Pujols, Manny, Crawford, Dye, and Tejada, that I should put up some staggering offensive numbers,

Pess Weighs in on Coach K..

We already established I am a UNC fan. So, it's obvious to all that I abhor Duke. But, the most recent events brought to light the reasons I think Coach K is a complete sleezeball. Let me paint a picture for you.

UNC dominates Duke. I mean, Duke came back to within 2, and then UNC ran away with it. So, it's an 11 point game with under a minute left. Coach K calls a timeout, so he obviously hasn't given up. Coach K has his starters in, so he doesn't think the game is over. And, for those who remember, teams can come back from double digit leads with less than a minute left (like Duke did against Maryland on Jan. 27, 2001). So, since Coach K was still palying to win, so was Roy Williams...who still has his starters in.

At the end of the game, with 15 seconds left, there is a player waiting to come in for Tyler Hansbrough. But, the FT is missed and Tyler grabs the rebound. As he goes up for a layup, Gerald Henderson comes flying in and nails Tyler with his elbow. Did he mean to hit him in the nose? Probably not. But, by his own admission, he meant to "block his shot or foul him." So, he came flying in recklessly and fouled him hard, just like he wanted.

Then, Coach K opens his mouth. He revelas that he's mad Roy was still trying, and says that event could have been avoided if the "players involved" weren't still in the game. Then, Coach K says that he would have suspended the player if he thought he did it on purpose. Riiiight. Just like he did when Laettner stomped on the chest of the Kentucky player. Not only is he full of crap in that regard, but his comments actually illuminate the intent on that play. Coach K was mad he was losing, that he couldn't come back, and that UNC hadn't given up. He wanted Roy to give up so he could keep his starters in the game and make the score respectable. And, when Roy didn't, he called a TO. He probably told them not to give up any easy baskets. And, he probably whined to his players about UNC still having their starters in.

Of course, Coach K gave his typical "my boys played their hearts out" crap that he always does. But, the way he handled this play really highlighted the lack of class that he has. "Duke people" want their school and athletes to be put on some pedestal for doing things the "right way." I find it hard to believe that anyone would claim this situation was handled the "right way." You see, the truth is this: Duke believes everything should go their way. They are "supposed" to win because it says Duke on their jerseys. They didn't win, they couldn't come back, and UNC didn't quit. So, Duke got frustrated. They performed a heinous foul, and now they are trying to slither their way out of it with the "we don't play like that" chant. Well Coach K, you do play like that now. And, thanks to your sleazy press conference, more people are starting to see you as the phony that you really are.

Did I mention that I hate Duke?

College Hoops...Heels have Disappointed

Let me get this out of the way: I am a University of MD alumni, B.S. & M.S., who roots for UNC basketball. There...I said it. But, I have a reason. Growing up, I started watching college basketball at an early age. While other kids watched Sesame Street or He-Man or Nickleodeon, I watched the ACC. However, thanks to Bob Wade, the Terps were hit with sanctions including a television ban.

So, as a young and impressionable child, I watched the teams that were always on TV: including my TarHeels. I rooted for them year in and year out, and I became a dedicated/diehard fan. When I got to UMD, I tried to become a Terps Basketball fan, but I couldn't change allegiances. I was too loyal. So, as it stands now, I root for the Terps in every sport except basketball- including being a season ticket holder for Terrapin football. Now, if the Terps aren't playing the Heels, I like to see them do well. But, when the Heels come to town, I root UNC.

Now that I explained my strange athletic allegiances, I have to say that the TarHeels are disappointing. This team is stacked with talent, but they seem to be getting worse as the season goes along. They have been playing horrendous team defense lately. Frasor doesn't cover PGs well, but he gets legit minutes. Wright blocks shots, but he doesn't play good interior defense. Ellington isn't a shutdown defender by any means. On top of these problems, Roy Williams insists on playing 10-11 guys a night. That's fine at the beginning of the year when you need to find out who the studs are. But come February/March, this team should have gotten down to a nice 8 man rotation where the best players are on the court a lot.

IMO, Roy should have gone to a starting 5 with Lawson, Ginyard, Terry, Wright, Hansbrough. Ginyard is a tenacious defender who can stick like glue to the top 2 or 3 on the other team. And, there are plenty of scorers on the court to pick up for his weak offense. Then, Roy can bring Ellington, Danny Green, and Thompson off the bench. Thomas/Frasor can steal a few minutes here and there, and Miller could come in and shoot some threes. But, the best players need to get more minutes.

Now, with the ACC tourney fast approaching, the Heels need a win against Duke on Sunday to lock up a 1st round bye in the tourney. Hopefully the defense will pick it up, because a loss to Duke would sting.

Draft Results

In the draft last night, Pess acquired Jose Valerde (RP, ARZ). Excuse me?

I think Pippen has a little bit of a jealousy problem. Why does he want to come back? It's simple: Cash. Pippen owes over $5 million for his failed business venture called "Air Pip." This week has been jam-packed with action. We've seen an astronaut go insane, wear diapers (we all know that depends aren't all they are cracked up to be), and pepper spray a woman who was sleeping with a man who she wasn't sleeping with...but thought she was...or something like that. Driving 900 miles in a diaper to confront an arch enemy? That hasn't happened since Wilford Brimley drove to Mexico to take on Cock Fighters.

And, if this wasn't enough, everyone's favorite drug-addicted, incoherent, stripper-turned playmate-turned fatso-turned "celebrity" entered the new. Shockingly, she was found unresponsive...much like her late husband was on their honeymoon. All I keep hearing is how sad this is for the baby? Really? That child no longer has to be raised by a buffoon...and it's sad? In 20 years, that child may look back on this event as a lucky break.

Did I forget to mention that the Tar Heels knocked off the evil Blue Devils? The bad news is that UNC played no defense for the second straight game. The good news is that it didn't matter. Coach K went with the brilliant move of playing some guy named Zouebek to stop Tyler. The only problem is that Coach K has never let this man touch a basketball before. As a result, Zuobek tired after 18.3 seconds of play, scored no points, took no shots, and grabbed a whopping 2 rebounds. Jon Scheyer showed that he is a good player. And, he also seems to have inherited the Duke "I'm going to cry if you call another foul on me" face from JJ.

All in all, a rather eventful week. Baseball season is also quickly approaching, as pitchers and catchers report in less than a week. Will this be the season the Orioles climb all the way to 3rd place?

Trade with Paint It Black

In his first trade with one of the expansion teams, Pess Players acquire Chris Carpenter. This season ended with a loss in the Finals (congrats to Shuppers for repeating as champ). So, the ole' ballcoach of the Pess Players is looking to make some drastic changes this 0ff-season. Basically, every player not named Pujols is available for trades. I'd like to get a lot younger and see wholesale changes to my roster. The "core" of the team has been the same for a while, and I'm starting to get bored. It might mean I give up lots of talent and get less talent back...but, it should make things more fun next season. Stay tuned for what will hopefully be an off-season full of trades...
USA Bball just isn't that good...

For those of you surprised by Team USA losing to Greece, I ask you this: have you watched the NBA lately? American BBall has turned into a mess. Sure, NBA players are freakish athletes. But, the game has transformed into one involving no jump shots, defense, or team play. Maybe the "rules" of the NBA should be included in international play: stars cannot foul out, if Lebron misses it's a foul, you can carry as long as you have a nice finish, if Lebron looks sad it's a foul, etc...

Add in the fact that NBA players are currently more concerned with being the next on the "Caught with an Unregistered Handgun " list (see Wilcox, Chris;Baxter, Lonny) than they are with defending the backdoor pass or pick & roll, and it makes perfect sense that Team USA loses to a team from Greece with no players that you can name (unless you happen to be the one guy familiar with the career of Theodoros Papaloukas). Shockingly, this league of quality citizens makes articles like this seem entirely plausible.

Sure, having Ben Wallace, Shaq, & Kobe might have helped. Maybe watching instructional videos on how to throw a chest pass would have helped. Maybe if Coach K wasn't distracted by the presence of his 2 lovers (Wojo and Battier) on the bench, he could have coached this team to a victory. But, inevitably, this team would have lost to some country who actually plays basketball isn't concerned with making a highlight that would impress Hot Sauce. This one, a 14 team league, was a success if I do say so myself. Aside from the selecting of countless players, drafts are usually good for mindless and crude banter among the teams. "Does anyone know if Monte Kiffin is starting this year?"

This league, however, had one manager who was a particular numbskull. He had a strong (and usually absurd) opinion on everything. After being mocked for drafting Chad Jackson (a rookie WR who is currently semi-injured, but should contribute to a strong offense this season), the obnoxious man drafted Curtis Martin. That's right folks, he drafted a RB who most people expect to retire before playing another game.

So, I ask you, who would you rather have? A WR with strong upside who will move up the depth chart if the pouting Deoin Branch is traded? Or, a RB who is more likely to compete in a bingo parlor than in the Meadowlands?

Minor League Roster

Here is the current minor league roster. Some changes will be made prior to playoff rosters being set (Duncan and Markakis...get ready for your callup). Not like anyone reading this (if there is anyone reading this) cares, because no one even knows who any of these players are. But, I'm cool like that...and, I have time to waste because a little league world series game I was going to watch has been canceled (god...I really am that pathetic). Since I know you are all sitting at home saying "stop rambling and let me see your wonderful minor league roster already!", here it is:

Barfield, Josh (2B, SD)
Brown, Andrew (RP, CLE)
Botts, Jason (OF, TEX)
Carvajal, Marcos (RP, TB)
Delcarmen, Manny (RP, BOS)
Duncan, Chris (1B/OF, STL)
Eldred, Brad (1B, PIT)
Everts, Clint (SP, WAS)
Giarratano, Tony (SS, DET)
Gonzales, Carlos (OF, ARZ)
Hinckley, Michael (SP, WAS)
Kolb, Dan (RP, MIL)
Laird, Gerald (C, TEX)
Markakis, Nick (OF, BAL)
Moss, Brandon (OF, BOS)
O'Flaherty, Eric (RP, SEA)
Olmedo, Ray (2B, CIN)
Osoria, Franquelis (RP, LAD)
Pedroia, Dustin (SS, BOS)
Pena, Tony (RP, ARZ)
Ramirez, Ismael (SP, TOR)
Rasner, Darrel (SP, NYY)
Romero, Davis (RP, TOR)
Ross, Cody (OF, FLA)
Slocum, Brian (RP, CLE)

The Playoff Race....

Well, I haven't done this blog thing for a while due to my hectic schedule. I have been splitting time between saving the whales, fighting Hezbollah, and playing war games with Maurice Clarret. But, now that ole' Mo is in prison, my schedule has cleared up.

A 3 game series with Otto (who was actually the "other" guy in the car with moronic Lonny Baxter), that could decide the playoff race. Pess won the opening day with a 178 point performance led by Ian Snell and Kevin Millwood. Kevin Barry was upset he didn't get a chance to contribute. But, how would he contribute? He sucks.

Trade:

I sent Carlos Delgado packing a few days ago. We was shipped off to Galaxy for Conor Jackson, Dustin Pedroia, and a 4th round draft pick. Jackson is already devleoping into a polished hitter at a young age. Pedroia, at age 22, is the starting SS for Boston's AAA team, and he could make the majors next season.
